Campari & SKYY Spirits Event at the Empire Hotel Rooftop
Now that a year has passed since Campari’s 150th Anniversary Party at the Bowery Hotel (part 1 part 2), the liquor’s parent company SKYY Spirits came back to us to design another branded party - this time at the Empire Hotel Rooftop. Hosted by SKYY Spirits for Impact Magazine, the industry event welcomed executives for all major spirit companies including Campari’s top management from Milan. Given the in-the-spotlight spirit of the evening, the design called for luxe and very beautiful flowers, so we chose none other than orchids and lilies.
Our front bar arrangements consisted of red lilies with plum cymbidium orchids, red mocara and James Story orchids. Our team styled the bar with cymbidium heads, Campari and SKYY Infusions bottles along with custom menus offering the famed Negroni and Aperol Spritz cocktails.
We carried the cymbidium orchids up to the gold wire lighting fixtures as decoration above the bar. The six balls studded with white cymbidium and lemon leaves exceeded our expectations based on a trial on a single fixture – almost butterfly-like, the dozens of orchids appeared to flutter with the lights on!
The smaller arrangements for the low cocktail tables combined various types of red and golden-hued orchid stems in line with Campari's signature coloring.
The choice of florals worked well in the outdoor terrace whose tropical greenery suits the exotic appeal of orchids & lilies.
For the terrace bar, we kept the same combination of flowers but altered the hues. Here a detail of white lilies, white cymbidium orchids, red mocara and James Story orchids is a great example of how lilies and orchids share complimenting texture and lines.
Overall, we were happy to please the party’s host and surprise the venue itself by the transformation of the space. The success of the design can be attributed to an elegant & consistent visual scheme without over-branding a label familiar to all in attendance. We're always grateful to work along that fine line between the obvious and the unexpected when it comes to flowers.

Flowers at Paris Fashion Week
Now that Paris Fashion Week has about reached its finale we’ve surveyed most everything floral recently seen on the runways. Our favorite inclusion of flowers came last night with Riccardo Tisci’s designs on the Givenchy catwalk. The designer succinctly harnessed the richness, exoticism and true beauty of orchids for both pattern and runway design. Using tropicals and purple orchid plants to decorate several runway portals in floral abundance, the overall design showcased the living inspiration for new and interesting clothing done in black-patent, see-through organza, and orchid prints.
At Viktor+Rolf the Amsterdam-based fashion house stayed true to their favorite flower with a few sweaters featuring rose intarisas. The most recent edition since the giant sequence rose blooming on Natalie Portman’s gown at the Golden Globes appears to be the rose objectivitied – that is, the iconic bloom presented as if encased on the model's chest, a sort of object de curiosité to be artfully examined.
Italian designer Giambattista Valli never shys from using punchy colors in Fall e.g. this overcoat incorporating a graphic mix of flower shapes shaded in pinks and reds that very much reminds me of this pink ombre centerpiece.
Most of all, we admire when designers recognize that flowers are not only a Spring/Summer phenomenon. Countless varieties bloom during all seasons, so no wonder we find these dahlias – which we source locally in September and October – rendered by Belgian fashion designer Veronique Leroy for fashion house Leonard an appropriate print for Fall.

Biz Bash EXPO & Awards
Last Wednesday marked the annual Biz Bash EXPO & Awards at the Javits Convention Center here in New York City. The EXPO is a nationwide trade show whose mission seeks to unite professionals in the event industry for a day of education, fresh ideas and entertainment. More than 3,000 industry-related participants gathered from around the region to see and be seen by anyone from event planners & florists to gourmet caterers & caviar importers. Prior to the day, we were honored by Biz Bash to be nominated for our event design for Campari's 150th Anniversary for Best Overall Event Decor (Budget under $50k).
In Bloom's station at the EXPO engendered a dramatic yet approachable feel. Our designers hand-made a sensitively designed display of wisteria vines and a variety of orchids within the 10' x 10' booth space. By arching the vines over and around a flat-screen featuring images of past projects, we integrated an organic, substantial feeling into a very temporary space.
The tabletop flowers featured a fiery display of vanda and mocara orchids carefully wrapped on wisteria vines in a progression from yellow to orange to red-hued blooms. Check out Parker, our design coordinator, midway through wrapping the tabletop vines with single stems of vanda orchids to create a continuous, flowering branch.
For the backdrop we introduced cymbidium & mocara orchids with green & Spanish moss to finish off the organic effect. The more flowers and moss added, the more alive the installation became. We appreciated all of the enthusiastic responses we received from of the wonderful people we met throughout the day.

Great Bridal Expo in New York
In Bloom New York participated in the Great Bridal Expo held on Friday April 9, 2010 at the Marriott Marquis hotel in Times Square. We were very excited to be involved in this bridal show - it was a great opportunity to meet prospective brides and new vendors. We decided to go against the grain and chose three high cocktail tables instead of the traditional long table. The individual tables allowed us to showcase two different designs and color schemes instead of having a hodgepodge of arrangements and bouquets on a single table.
Our table on the left involved a primarily pink and white color scheme. The tall centerpiece consisted of white Cherry Blossoms, white Cymbidium Orchids, gorgeous Antiqued Hydrangeas, pops of yellow Oncidium Orchids and pink Lisianthus. We left the design very natural and free flowing, allowing the flowers and branches to mix together well.
The matching bridal bouquet consisted of white Cymbidium Orchids and the Antiqued Hydrangeas. We chose not to add every flower included in the large centerpiece to remain clean and simple. We added three sterling silver julep cups filled with pink Lisianthus and pink Cherry Blossoms to complete the look. The heavy-weight cotton linen we chose was in a Berry tone that added beautiful, contrasting color to the overall floral design.
For the second display, we decided to go with a black and white theme using green flowers as the pop of color. We fell in love with this Black Etoile Print heavy cotton linen at Party Rental Ltd and made use of this substantial black glass urn for the tall centerpiece. Since we picked a busy linen we decided on a simple arrangement of green dogwood branches. Always delicate and beautiful, flowering dogwood branches can come in either green, white, pink or red.
We added 6 haning, mercury glass votives from the branches as well as several mercury glass cups filled with green Snap Dragons, Mini Hydrangeas, and green Roses. We created a beautiful bouquet with green Cymbidium Orchids, green Roses, green Hypericum Berries, and green Mini Hydrangeas. This bouquet seemed to please everyone for its simple color scheme yet luxurious texture.

Holiday Party in Soho
This past December, In Bloom New York had the pleasure of working on an exciting holiday party at a Soho Residence. The gracious host had requested a decorated tree, a large table display and a few arrangements throughout the apartment. To our delight, his only specification was to use all white.
Our team of designers began sketching ideas for the tree. We knew that we we wanted something different, monochromatic and avant garde to keep consistent with the design of the apartment. These beautiful birds found at Bergdorf Good inspired us all and lead the design of the event.
We decked the tree with all silver, white and mercury ornaments of different sizes and design to bring texture to the tree. To make the tree appear full, we added silk silver magnolia flowers as well as over fifty stems of fresh white hydrangeas (use green tubes filled with water to keep flowers hydrated or allow to dry naturally). For a touch of elegance and a small pop of color, we added small gold Fabrege eggs with ruby colored crystals.
To complete, we created a "birds nest" at the top of the tree using white birch branches. Instead of the traditional tree topper, we placed a large bird perched in his nest and used silver lame fabric purchased at Mood Fabrics as the tree skirt.
The idea for the main table installation was to separate the all white arrangements by using various types of flowers and vases to create texture and depth. The table was anchored by a centered tall white birch arrangement with numerous arrangements on both sides. Pussy willow served as the "runner" for the table and broke up the vases nicely. White hydrangeas, tulips, lisianthus, vanda orchids, peonies, calla lilies, ranunculus, hyacinths, and amaryllis were arranged in different sizes of glass and mercury vases.
Small silver birds were topped the arrangements and tied the theme together.
The use of a single type of flower in each vase accentuated the difference between the blooms and was very dramatic.
We completed our Lush Winter Wonderland with a few arrangements of peonies, amaryllis, and tulips scattered throughout the apartment and bathrooms.
